Over 20 Years of Stellar Service
John Kontogianis grew up in a family that always showed an appreciation for music.
Starting on drums with his uncle around the age of seven, John was never forced into the world of music but naturally carried an enjoyment for it. Through the years John participated in school system and extracurricular music programs which caused that passion to grow and lead him to college to major in music. During his university years, John added piano to his resume, performed in various music groups, and was hired with Geddes Music Store as a teacher in the late 90’s. “After joining the store, I started to learn basic instrument services with an instrument mechanic that was affiliated with the store at the time,” said John. “That led to the opportunity from the founder and namesake of the business to work in the retail store.” Spending time in the store allowed John to learn more about piano trade work and involve himself in the business aspect of sales and management. Then in 2008, John took the ultimate leap and purchased the store from the original owner.
Geddes Music Store buys, sells, and trades new and used musical instruments. They also offer school band instrument rentals, music lessons, musical instrument repair, and piano tuning services. “We are, as much as possible, a full-scale service,” said John. Geddes also provides all of the strings, amps, pics, pedals, cables, drum sticks, drum heads, straps, mics, reeds, and musical accessories you might need to go along with your instrument. “We also have a lesson program with almost every instrument and strive to keep national pricing on retail items in your local community, saving you from having to drive over the hill or wait for online shipping.” Shopping at Geddes guarantees that you’ll find the same name brands and market value, along with servicing, information, set up, and service close by. They also offer a school rental plan that is month-to-month with no long-term obligation, as well as an excellent rent-to-own program that applies one hundred percent of your rental fees toward the purchase of your instrument.
The shop was originally located in downtown Antioch, eventually relocating to Brentwood Boulevard next to La Costa Taqueria. Then in 2019 John moved the store to their First Street location downtown where they began the process of building the entire interior to perfection, completing just in time for March 2020 to shut them down. “It’s been an interesting two-year struggle,” said John. “Some things that were never really a focus before became the priority. We had to learn to make it work. Thankfully people would still call us for certain things; our community still wanted to support us.”
“I love being downtown. I love Brentwood in general. I’ve always been very grateful for the fact that the town, community, and people who have been involved in growing Brentwood itself have always put the schools first. The music programs have been one of our big supporters. I’m happy to see that the arts in general have always been so widely accepted here.” John hopes to continue servicing the local community and providing opportunity for the aspiring artist. “I want to be there for the starry-eyed person who wants to try music for the first time.”
